A Book Club! so my brain doesnt go to mush!

[there is a new recipe for Country Captain Chicken down below]

I wrote last week about the possibility of reading a book or two together over the summer holiday. I havent done much reading (other than Pat the Bunny and cookbooks) lately, and I miss it.

I received nineteen recommendations to read Kathryn Stocketts, The Help.
I dont know anything about this book other than the information listed on Amazon, and that it appears to be a bit controversial to some reviewers.

But my friend Danielle sells an awful lot of copies, and Shirley liked it, so thats good enough for me.

The kids are off school this upcoming Monday, and Ill need a good book to read during quiet reading time. Penny (I dont have a link for Penny!) pointed out that its still only available in hardback (although there is a kindle version), but my local library has 12 copies, so hopefully yours has a copy to borrow.

Hows July 15 or thereabouts work? Ive got a deadline July 1, which is why Id prefer a bit of wiggle-room. The 15th is a Thursday.

Ill start a discussion on this site in the morning, and then host a live twitter party that evening---5 to 6 pm pacific time.

If you dont have twitter, no worries. You can still follow along, even without an account.

As for facebook, Im still a holdout. I dont have an account---Im super nervous to have "just one more thing" to check during the day, and I figure if anyone really wants to get a hold of me they can track me down. That said, a reader did start a fan page where you can evidently chat back and forth. I think. Im not actually sure how it all works!

Happy reading! See you on July 15th!

Lets Go Wild For Blackberries

Its blackberry season and I spent an afternoon foraging in the nearby woods for the luscious ripe berries. My arms are loaded with track marks from the vicious thorns that guard the precious fruit, but I managed to collect a large bucket full.

Chances are, wherever you live, there are wild blackberries growing nearby. As they ripen, the berries will grow in size and change color from green to pink to purple to shiny black when ripe.

It took every bit of restraint I could muster to not pop them directly into my mouth as I was picking. Once you get them home, cover the berries with cold water, add a teaspoon of salt (to kill any bugs), and let them stand for an hour or so. Then transfer them to a colander and rinse thoroughly under cold running water.

Blackberries are one of the healthiest fruits youll find. These powerful antioxidents are also a delicious source of vitamins A, B, C, E, calcium, iron and fiber. In fact, just a half-cup serving of raw blackberries has about the same fiber content as 3/4 cup of brown rice. Lab studies on these thorny-bushed berries at The Ohio State University (my alma mater!) showed the ability to stop tumor formation in the oral cavity, as well as proliferation of colon cancer cells.

As with most fruits, you get the maximum health benefits when you eat them raw. Ive always preferred to eat them just as they are — natures candies — but then I took a tour of cyberspace and found these wildly creative recipes. While raw, each one just enhances their flavor. Try one or try them all, but please, watch out for those thorns!

  • Organic Greens with Basil & Blackberry Salad Dressing
  • Wild Blackberry Cobbler à la Earth Mother
  • Watermelon Blackberry Soup
  • Blackberry Blast, a refreshing drink
  • The Raw Epicureans Chilly Almond Panna Cotta with Blackberry Compote
  • Ani Phyos Blueberry Muffins with Lemon Blackberry Glaze
  • Raw Vegan Peach & Blackberry Tart
